Austerity is the new trends in Indian Politics!

Sonia Gandhi flew economy class yesterday and Rahul Gandhi traveled on Shatabdi train. Is it a political drama or hype to get more votes or are they genuinely concerned about our hard earned and paid income tax.

sonia and rahul gandhi- the simple life

Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday, Sep 14 travelled to Mumbai in the economy class via flight, setting an example for all ministers. In fact, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee travelled to Kolkata by economy class and External Affairs Minister SM Krishna traveled to Belarus in the economy class of a Lufthansa flight. He also said that he would be using commercial flights for his travels henceforth.

It has been almost a week that all news channel and TV channels are going gaga over austerity drive by the central government and congress party. It started few days back when the government asked foreign minister S M Krishna and his deputy Shashi Tharoor to give up the five-star accommodation they were enjoying in Delhi even if they were paying from own pockets. And so what if union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar didn’t like cost-cutting in travelling saying business class provides comfort, privacy and allows them to clear files even while flying.

The effect is that now Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel had to travel to Mumbai by the low-cost carrier Indigo and Union heavy industries minister Vilasrao Deshmukh came to Mumbai from Delhi by SpiceJet and Union power minister Sushilkumar Shinde flew economy on Air India to Delhi.

mamta banarjee

Other side, railway minister Mamata Banerjee says “she has been practising austerity for decades”. Banerjee, who has not yet taken the official car, and commute in a private vehicle to office and fly in economy class and pay for own snacks. A jhola slunging over shoulders a cotton saree and hawai chappal in feet is what Mamta Banarjee’s trademark. She really lives like an ‘aam janta’ as she feels ‘commoners are the strength of the country’.

Youngsters are looking forward to seeing Rahul Gandhi in same train compartment or high flying cabinet minister in low budget flight with them. Let’s see, how long this austerity drive goes among Indian Politicians. Will they really enjoy this trend and set some example or will it create problems just like today, when Rahul Gandhi’s train was stoned. Austerity at the cost of security!

Men’s fashion week.

dino morea and anil kumble in manoviraj creation.

Fashion week in India is not a new thing but what is special this time was it being a solely men’s fashion week and it will definitely play a significant role in positioning the Indian fashion market in world. Planning a all-men-fashion-week was in talks from a long time from the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and after partnership with Van Heusen it is all set to change the dynamics of the Indian fashion landscape.

Models present creations by Indian designer Himmat Singh.

Van Heusen India Mens Week’ was held in New Delhi on September 11 – 13, 2009 at The Grand and featured 15 shows by 21 designers.
Brands like Reid and Taylor, and Raymonds are exclusive men’s fashion brands, but if one wants to opt for a designer label, the choices are restricted to bridal wear only. But many still feel that Indians are not ready for men’s fashion so what if John Abraham started selling fairness cream and Shahrukh Khan doesn’t mind sitting in bath tub to sell bathing soaps. Mainly because fashion design happens only for weddings in our country, that is why bridal wear is such a big thing. Though the branded men’s apparel segment is growing at 15 per cent and retail industry for men’s apparel is five times bigger than the women’s apparel segment in India (am sure this is news for many).

Models present creations by Indian designer Rajvi Mohan

Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI elaborated on the need for an independent forum for men’s fashion- “Men are active participants and contributors to the growth of fashion today, who have moved beyond deciding their favourite colour of ties and socks to actually cultivating loyalties for designers and lifestyle brands. Menswear dominates a larger per cent of branded apparel sales in the country and is said to be growing at a CAGR of 15%. The ‘Van Heusen India Mens Week’ aims to give menswear designers a structured impetus and the much needed platform to tap this potential of men’s fashion in India.”

Models present creations by Indian designer Ravi Bajaj.

India’s first men fashion week began with Ravi Bajaj’s collection. Apart from quality to excellence, the unique feature of his collection was the silhouettes that has evolved from hard edged eighties executive style to the much softer, in touch with soul look that is so trendy these days.

Rohit Bal launched The Badmaash collection depicting the naughty and flirtatious nature of a man and celebrating life in a wicked manner. In his words “The collection is very moody, vivacious, and self-obsessive. It revolves around the theme – I, me and myself,”

rocky s

Designer Rocky S used skin friendly fabrics like cottons, viols and linen. The collection was replete with colours like beige, ivory and blacks. And his inspiration was – It’s about me looking for freedom in my clothes. It’s about spiritualism in my clothes, so everything is very relaxed and very confident. His collection has stylish jackets, lean pants in exaggerated length.
Actor Dino Morea and cricketer Anil Kumble were showstopper for designer Manoviraj Khosla. Kumble walked the ramp 1st time and admitted that he is learning few things from younger generation of cricketers specially in fashion.

Talk of the event was Greek god look of Shantanu & Nikhil’s collection which has Grecian drapes in silk velvets. Also the man purse, a leather tote or anything sling was an essential accessory for men.

Salman Khan walked in a creation by designers Ashish Soni and Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna on the Grand finale day of ‘Van Heusen India Mens week’. Ashish Soni showcased his collection ‘On the Run’ in the first part, which was inspired by the film Don. And style gurus Rohit & Rahul decided to go eco-friendly and presented soothing collection ‘Hypernature’.

Made in India!

Designed in India or better say, Made in India, Made for India and recognized everywhere is something we are seeing these days.
Recently two very useful products got international recognition and awards.

One is Chulha. It got Index awards (biggest design award in the world) in Home category.

Intent: limit the dangerous health conditions caused by traditions of indoor cooking in many rural areas of the developing world. The Chulha is a stove designed to limit the dangerous health conditions caused by traditions of indoor cooking in many rural areas of the developing world.
chulha1achulha2

The stove is being made available by Philips Design to the universe of social entrepreneurs so that they can, free of charge, produce the stove, themselves, and generate local business while helping counter what the World Health Organization estimates is some 1.6 million deaths per year from conditions prompted by the toxic fumes of indoor cooking with “bio-mass” fuels (wood, dung, peat, etc.).  WHO estimates that 25 percent of indoor air-pollution deaths are in India, and that 800,000 infants die of related conditions worldwide, annually.

The Chulha creates a safer environment for indoor cooking in several ways.

       It traps smoke and heat inside a locally cast housing in such a way as to heat two pot-holes with a high rate of efficiency to require less fuel;

It then directs the smoke through a chimney chamber that includes a stack of slotted clay tablets – they capture particulates as the smoke moves through, cleaning the exhaust before it ever leaves the assembly; and

The Chulha’s chimney then includes an indoor access for cleaning, eliminating the need seen in previous devices for a family member,  usually the mother, to climb on the roof and attempt cleaning. This has been blamed for many accidents, along with the toxicity of the smoke.

“The target users of the Chulha are all the families in rural environments. The focus for the creation of the Chulha was India, however there are similarities in many countries in Africa, Latin America and other regions, as well as in India.”
“The fact that this product can be manufactured by even the end-user creates the opportunity in any location,”

Indian Art Summit 2009

It is happening for the 2nd time and it’s getting bigger and bigger- yeah India is set to give a platform to established as well as emerging artists, sculpture makers, photographers, new media designers, art enthusiasts and collectors. India Art Summit 2009 (19-22nd Aug at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi) was an answer for making art and the knowledge of art accessible to many by calling national & international artists, art galleries and audiences. A total of around 54 galleries were hosted, out of which 14 were from outside India.

Please click “i” tab in top right in slideshow for the artist and artwork details!

Three art projects- Purple wall project, exhibiting contemporary work by Indian & international artists and a Video Lounge, showing video art work and a Sculpture park in open area was one of the main attractions.

Indian art market is flourishing with a rate if 30-35% annually. It was $5 million in 2003 but reached approximately $150 million by year 2008. Especially European market is giving 300-400% more to the Indian art market than what it was 4-5 years back. With such great prices & recognition it is difficult to say that trends for collecting art is not booming in this economic downturn; there seems a ray of hope as there is fair response from national & international art buyers in this emerging market.

Update: “Around 250 artworks were sold for a total value of around Rs 26 crore (~ $6 million) by exhibiting galleries,” said a beaming Neha Kirpal, associate director of the Summit. Business at the 2009 Summit was thus more than double of last year’s Rs 10 crore figure. Source.

Mohawk rocks!

There is a funny competition amongst the fuchchas in setting up new trends, as the colleges open for a new season. You thought a cool dress and boots will make you a head-turner? Sometimes, its just hair which will make you a rocking dude!

So stop believing that a good hair cut is about- Length, Cut and Comfort. Sometimes one must dare to experiment by flaunting rebellious hair styles. Latest in hairstyling is Mohawk! It was sported by Amir Khan in Taare Zameen Par and even in a song (Behka) in Gajini.

Amir Darsheel and Amir Khan

But if you thought only boys can show attitude in this- check the recent pics of Rihana and Demi Moore (an image, posted by Aston Kutcher). Indian hairstylist like Ambika Pillai and Javed Habib confirms this hair trend is becoming popular amongst girls.

 rihana demi-moore

As Mohawk came from punk subculture, so hair colors play an important part- use it either as hair highlighter or just cover one section or go for complete hair do. You can opt for single or combinations of colors and choose from vibrant colors like orange, blue, pink, purple and green to neon shades which will make you stand out of the crowd.

Mohawk means, a hairstyle in which hairs are shaved from both the sides with just vertical hair line in the middle. But Fauxhawk or faux-hawk is getting more popular as you don’t have to shade side hair and but they are just layered and noticeable spike is made in center. color mohawk and pic by ophiah

So whatever version you are going to sport, be careful before mohawking. You need to look for your hair texture when it comes to the length. As fine hair needs added bounce so you will have to try and keep the hairstyle as short and full of layers as possible, in order to add more volume to it. Also be regular with shaving and trimming to maintain it. If going for bi or tri hawks be careful with the shaven and unshaven portions.

Youth Reality.

Reality shows are not a new thing but it is a latest trend among Indians. Team Trendiya brings you an insight of reality shows buzz.
From young to old, everyone is willing to go for a reality show and get 1 min fame + some quick money. These shows have traditionally used to be dancing and singing competitions but later on it diversified in more categories like laughter shows (comedy circus), talent show (India’ got talent), stunt shows (Roadies), beauty show (Get gorgeous) and some 24X7 live shows (Big boss).

Singing & dancing shows were the starting of reality shows
Main target age group of these reality shows is 18 -25 yrs old that’s young generation of India which comprises around 65% of the total India population. Definitely aiming them would be profitable. Anyway these games / shows are based on voting via SMS which is a proven big money making tactics apart from collecting the advertisement revenues.

MTV1

Undoubtedly, the most popular show in Youngistan is the MTV’s Roadies – and it has already completed 6 seasons. Either it’s rude Raghu & Rajeev or the bad boys & girls of the show but youngsters like to keep a tab on it. Seeing the demand for such shows, MTV has almost stopped playing music and has completely become RTV (Reality TV) with shows like On the Job (about unusual jobs), Splitsvilla (dating based show), Fast & Gorgeous, Stunt Mania (bike and adventure based), Connected (about twins), Teen Diva (beauty based) and many more.
 MTV-roadies

Channel V is yet to take a stand on some interesting reality shows in past they came up with some beauty shows like Get Gorgeous but at present they have nothing great to offer.

A newly started youth channel – UTVi Bindass channel is doing fantastic job to attract youth by offering shows like Beg, Steal or Borrow – about free adventurous travel and Dadagiri, which focus on college ragging & dance shows like Dance India Dance which were admired by teens & young. Infact UTVi tie up with Indian youth favorite coffee house Café coffee Day and brought a reality show to give a consumer interaction with brand in an interesting manner by installing camera in a Mumbai CCD.

utvBindass
When there are so many varieties of reality shows, the contestants and organizers know well how TRP and tears go together. They create controversy; they gain votes as their lifeline. Even if they are eliminated from show, they get pass to get news, from getting offer to some modeling or a tiny role in B grade Bollywood film or offers to be part of another reality show to spreading inside news of show, contestants and crew. It’s all part of the whole entertainment package.

splitsvilla-MTV

Recently Nikhil Chinapa got questioned by splitsvilla contestants itself and later he wrote a facebook response and tweeted the same “@nikhilchinapa My response to the media circus on Splitsvilla is on FB”

In today’s fast life, young generation is looking forward to join this new career “Reality Live” to transition from their unknown lives to get 1 minute fame + quick money. Wish them luck; else they would be eliminated from other career options :)

Campus cool!

Colleges are opened and so called social interaction aka ragging phase is almost over. It’s the time to show your coolness factor.

Footwear-  Guys have figured out that being experimental with their footwear will take them higher. That’s how after red sneakers, orange, yellow colors are also getting hit. U can team up with your T-shirt or for extra punch, paint some graffiti on them.

shoes
Girls doesn’t need to get high on heels, flats are still in. Just try freaky fluorescent straps. Bellies in different styles also look fabulous when you team well with your dress; like coordinating the color with belt and accessories. Incase, you feel very short or bored with flats and want to do some tip-toe, keep a pair of stilletos and platforms. But brown and black chappals are completely no-no. Try bold colors only.

Bottoms- shorts are in! Jeans are out. Girls please throw your capris, only hot pants will do the trick. In case you are shy and don’t have sexy legs can wear knee length shorts and skirts. Harem pants are also in from traditional block prints to plain in colors.

Pattern- After polka dots which are can be dotted anywhere from big tote to long tops to earrings, its checks print that is making statement from shorts, shirts, skirts to bags. Even if it gives school boy feel, wear it for cool & fresh look. Don’t forget, Katrina’s checked shorts in recently launched film ‘Newyork’.

Tops- Bright colors like purple, green, yellow are creating cool waves. With so many t-shirt website like bluebustee etc giving cool offer and cool message on tee, wearing mind on sleeve is also an in thing. In fact wear it for a cause, like supporting LGBTI. Either it is a well-fitted tee or a balloon tops, team it up with shorts or lycra legging.

College trends 2009

College trends 2009

Accessories- Wearing the big plastic necklaces and earrings is fading. Wear something different like jewelry made of paper, shells or clay. Blue pottery jewelry is also something in trends. Wearing a belt in colors will add special statement. So, an extra oomph factor will be there if you carry an umbrella in a bright color either to protect you from heat or un-sudden monsoon.
Bigger the better is best for you so tote with polka dots, checks prints or some message are cool to carry around the campus.

accessories-trends

Guys are getting more conscious about adding jinx with their accessories made of steel or wooden beads or just a bolder, rounded shade will do the trick. Again, say no to browns & blacks; tints of purple, blue and yellow are high for your eyes.
